Jasmin Vardimon Company: Our Sustainability

At the Jasmin Vardimon Company, sustainability is central to everything we do, both on stage and behind the scenes. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact through our building, our operations, and our creative practice.

Building Design and Environmental Performance

JV H.O.M.E has been designed and built to meet the BREEAM “Very Good” standard, an internationally recognised benchmark for sustainable construction, and achieves a B rated EPC score, reflecting strong energy performance.

Our lead contractors were awarded the Considerate Constructors Certificate of Excellence in recognition of their commitment to environmental responsibility. Their work included initiatives such as water re harvesting, collaboration with an ecologist, recycling programmes, and carbon offsetting.

The building supports ongoing efficiency through a DALI lighting system, which provides intelligent control of motion sensitive lighting. This ensures that lighting is only used when required and can adapt to seasonal daylight changes and patterns of occupancy.

A Building Management System controls the operation of mechanical systems, including heating and air handling units, so that they are only in use when needed. Individual room controls further reduce energy use by preventing heating in unoccupied spaces.

A leak detection system within the plant room monitors water flow and automatically shuts off the supply if unusual activity is detected, helping to minimise water waste.

Sustainable Operations

We support sustainable daily practices through a range of practical measures. Recycling systems are in place across office, kitchen, and food waste streams, and cycle storage is available to encourage environmentally friendly travel.

Staff are trained to switch off lighting and electronic equipment when not in use, reducing unnecessary energy consumption. Our staff led “Going Green” purchasing initiative prioritises environmentally responsible suppliers and sustainable products, including office and cleaning supplies.

Wherever possible, we work with local suppliers and contractors to reduce emissions associated with travel and transportation.

Training, Leadership and Climate Action

We are committed to building environmental knowledge and leadership across the organisation. Staff have completed training including Julie’s Bicycle Creative Climate Literacy, Carbon Literacy certification, and the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Climate Change and Environmental Awareness.

Our Lead Trustee for Environmental Responsibility has completed the Julie’s Bicycle Board Environmental Champions programme, ensuring that sustainability is embedded within governance and decision making.

The Jasmin Vardimon Company has signed the “We Make Tomorrow” pledge, a global campaign that brings together creatives and cultural leaders in collective climate action.

Industry Engagement and Environmental Monitoring

The Jasmin Vardimon Company is an active participant in Julie’s Bicycle Buildings Net Zero Energy Programme, supporting our work to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.

We monitor and report our environmental performance annually through Julie’s Bicycle and use Theatre Green Book tools and resources to track progress and guide improvements. Our team also works with Theatre Green Book standards in the delivery of touring productions.

Sustainable Creative Practice and Policies

Sustainability is embedded in both our policies and our creative work. Our Environmental Policy is included in the JV2 course participants’ handbook alongside clear environmental guidelines.

Our JV2 Costume Designer contracts require the use of sustainable materials, the reuse and adaptation of existing costumes from our archive, and a commitment to avoiding fast fashion.
